The Story Behind Tuned

A background in small business software

I've spent most of my career building software for small, service-based businesses — tools for scheduling, payments, client management, and day-to-day operations. I worked closely with practitioners who were deeply skilled at their craft but often frustrated by the software they were forced to use.

Over time, I saw a pattern repeat across the industry: small software companies grow, get acquired, and slowly become more corporate. The incentives shift. Features multiply. The product starts serving growth targets and marketing funnels instead of the people actually using it.

That experience shaped how I think about product: great software should make practitioners' lives simpler, not more complicated.

Why bodywork matters

Around the same time, I was spending more of my own life in the world of wellness and recovery. I beat up my body through training and stress, and eventually learned that consistent bodywork from a skilled practitioner wasn't a luxury — it was foundational to my health.

That experience changed how I saw the profession. I came to deeply respect massage therapists as highly skilled, thoughtful practitioners doing meaningful work. And I began to see how essential it is that they have tools that support — rather than complicate — their practice.

Why independence matters (at a high level)

As I got to know more therapists, I also came to appreciate how much independence shapes their work, their income, and their quality of life. Many therapists enter the field because they care deeply about helping people — yet too often, they're constrained by systems that don't fully recognize their skill or value.

For me, this made one thing clear: if we truly respect bodywork as a profession, we should also support therapists who want to build practices on their own terms. Tuned is meant to make that path more practical, not more overwhelming.

The problem we saw

Independent massage therapists are in high demand, but they're often stuck with software that isn't built for them. Many platforms are designed for multiple industries, for multi-location businesses, or for clinics that operate very differently from a solo practice.

The result is predictable: therapists end up juggling multiple tools — calendars, intake forms, payment apps, text threads, and spreadsheets — just to keep things running. Instead of spending energy on their clients, they spend it managing software.
